Talk Description
There are 3 million asthmatics in SA (1% of global pop). This is a source of considerable morbidity and contributes to healthcare costs.

SA has highest asthma mortality in the world.

This presentation offers information on how the diagnosis of severe asthma should be confirmed and addresses the drivers of poor control.

It explores therapeutic options and looks at bronchial thermoplasty as a therapy. Prof Dheda discusses related studies.

Dheda discusses mediastine lesions and looks at alternatives to surgery as mediastinoscopy is not a benign procedure. By contrast EBUS-TBNA allows imaging of mediastinal and other structures.

Dheda presents a video of endobrachial ultrasound (EBUS) which is a brochoscopic technique of EBUS-TBNA and provides information on reports on the effectiveness of EBUS-TBNA.

Discusses the methodology for Groote Schuur Hospital and the results.
