Talk Description
"Gout has been recognised for centuries, but modern medicine has firmly established that it is far more than an occasional attack of a painful swollen toe. It is a chronic inflammatory crystal arthropathy driven by hyperuricaemia, and is increasingly understood to sit within a broader web of metabolic disease, cardiovascular risk and chronic kidney disease. Left untreated, gout may lead to recurrent flares, tophaceous disease, irreversible joint damage and renal complications, making it a condition with consequences well beyond the acute attack.
Yet, the crystal is not always so clear. Difficult-to-treat gout presents a particular challenge when treatment decisions must be balanced against renal impairment, drug interactions, intolerance and other contraindications."
