Talk Description
Human factors are often overlooked when working in remote and austere medical environments. Human factors are all the contributing factors that make us as humans who we are, which in turn affects how we work in teams and how we react in emergency situations. Human factors have influence in the medical environment on every level. Training, active working environment and past experiences, which all play an essential role in identifying, correcting, and planning how to manage human factors. By creating an awareness of human factors and how they influence us in remote medicine, I hope that individuals and teams can become better prepared to cope in remote and austere medical environments.
When confronted with a patient in a remote or austere environment, having a small medical kit can contribute positively to reduce the burden of human factors. The ability to carry lifesaving equipment in a small medical kit is possible. Here I share my experiences, challenges and lessons learnt from 17 years of working within a Wilderness rescue environment.
