Talk Description
2018 marks the 40th anniversary since the landmark Alma Ata Declaration which pronounced radical aims such as global social reforms towards the achievement of Health for All, using the Primary Health Care approach. The meaning of Health was redefined to be understood as a complete state of physical, emotional, social (and it may be added financial, spiritual and political) well-being. The declaration called on governments and other structures to address major global inequities through economic and political approaches. It also called for the respect of individual and community rights and duties to participate in their own health. The principles from this declaration encouraged use of a holistic approach and is applicable at all levels of care. The Ottowa charter of 1986 spoke about Health Promotion as the vehicle for the achievement of Health for All. There have been many challenges towards the realization of the achievement of HEALTH FOR ALL. In this session barriers individual clinicians face in applying this approach will be explored and how this can be overcome. The link between these values and Islam will also be discussed, from a historical, theoretical and practical perspective. In the golden era of Islam, some of these principles were at an advanced stage of practice. It can be argued that these values are applicable now more than ever, putting Muslims in the forefront to potentially become leaders and innovators in the current and future quest for the achievement of Health for All.
