Talk Description
This presentation provides an overview of the role of complementary medicine in the prevention and management of common respiratory infections, including the common cold and influenza. The session begins by explaining the regulatory framework of complementary medicine in South Africa, highlighting the role of registered homeopathic practitioners within the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA).
Participants are introduced to the differences and areas of overlap between conventional medicine, complementary medicine, and functional medicine. The presentation outlines the principles of homeopathy, its historical development, and its place within a patient-centred, integrative healthcare approach. The origins and core concepts of functional medicine are also discussed, with emphasis on identifying and addressing factors that may influence health and immune function.
A substantial portion of the presentation reviews the available scientific literature relating to homeopathy and selected complementary medicine interventions used for upper respiratory tract infections. Current evidence, strengths, limitations, and areas requiring further research are examined, with particular attention given to the need for larger, high-quality clinical trials.
The presentation concludes with practical, evidence-informed recommendations regarding prevention, self-care, lifestyle measures, immune health, and recognition of situations requiring medical referral. Emphasis is placed on the complementary use of homeopathy alongside conventional medical care as part of an integrated approach to patient wellbeing.
