In this presentation, Dr Jones looks at the physiology of pregnancy and the kidney. She explores the physiological adaptations in pregnancy, which are mostly completed by 10 weeks and discusses the various factors influencing sodium excretion during pregnancy. Dr Jones lists the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including gestational hypertension and discusses risk factors associated with developing pre-eclampsia, the pathophysiology as well as the histopathology of pre-eclampsia. Jones discusses the maternal complications of pre-eclampsia and adds that 83% of hypertensive diseases of pregnancy are due to eclampsia and proteinuric hypertension adding that complications of HDP results in increase morbidity and mortality, ICU admissions and costs. Dr Jones provides information on foetal complications and states that 35% of stillbirths are associated with hypertension in the developed world. Jones discusses prevention, which can be divided into during pregnancy, and, after pregnancy. She provides information on the burden of the disease and deaths related to HDP and perinatal mortality; detecting the risk; prevention; and, genetics and receptors.
