Talk Description
South Africa is a developing country that is facing the challenge of caregivers accessing ECI services (Sleeming, et al., 2012) (UNICEF, 2011). A number of factors, such as transport, education, cost, and time, have been reported to influence access to therapy services. This may lead to poor or late access of services, decreasing the effectiveness of ECI. Bertha Gxowa hospital is a District hospital situated in Germiston running a multidisciplinary ECI service that includes occupational therapy. However, it is unclear who is accessing these services and whether these services are being accessed timeously and appropriately.
The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of the population of caregivers and their children who accessed occupational therapy for the first time and to investigate the factors (both barriers and facilitators) that influenced why caregivers access therapy services for their children. This presentation will present the results of this study and will focus specifically on the characteristics of the population that does access services. Both barriers and facilitators will be discussed and suggestions for future planning of ECI services will be made.
