Talk Description
Diabetes is a complex chronic disease that creates a psychosocial challenge to the child with diabetes and the family unit as a whole. One needs to understand that the spectrum of Diabetes in Paediatrics can extend from the neonatal period, through to infancy, adolescence and then into adulthood and is not purely limited to Type 1 Diabetes, as previously thought. There is intricate interplay between the monitoring of the disease (diabetes control), the actual management of the disease, as well as the emotional and psychological aspects, that are too often neglected or overlooked. A balance needs to be maintained in order to enable optimum growth of the child and to allow for the most “normal” or “near normal” lifestyle that can be achieved, so that the patient never feels that s/he is missing-out or completely overwhelmed by the condition. Holistic management of diabetes is best achieved with the aid of a multidisciplinary team which includes the medical practitioner and sub-specialists, the diabetic nurse/educator, insulin pump specialist, the allied disciplines (dietitian, podiatrist, psychologist, occupational therapist) and not forgetting the parents/caregivers and extended family, the school teacher, gym instructor and the willing participation of the patient, without which, none of the above will be possible.
