Talk Description
Cancer remains one of the most formidable challenges in modern medicine. Although descriptions of malignant growths date back to ancient Egyptian papyri, it is only in the past century that systematic screening has emerged as a powerful strategy to reduce cancer-related mortality. The principle is simple: detect disease early, intervene promptly, and alter the natural history of the condition. In practice, however, screening is nuanced, resource-dependent, and at times controversial.
Five common malignancies affecting both men and women account for a substantial proportion of global cancer morbidity and mortality. In South Africa, these cancers place a considerable strain on patients, families, and healthcare systems alike. Early-stage disease is often asymptomatic, yet eminently treatable. Identifying individuals at risk, applying evidence-based screening modalities, and understanding the balance between benefit and harm are critical components of modern oncological care.
