Talk Description
ITP is defined as a reduction in the platelet concentration below 100 and is usually caused by immune destruction. It affects both adults and children although the expression of the disease is different in children and adults. ITP is a rare condition with prevalence at about 1 in 10 000.
In this presentation, Professor Novitzky focuses on the primary condition. He discusses the epidemiology; the pathophysiology; the diagnosis, and the various therapies available for treatment. Professor Novitzky also talks to studies relating to the various therapies.
He provides information on ITP in pregnancy and stresses the importance of checking the baby’s platelet count for up to five days after delivery.
