Talk Description
Diabetes in pregnancy is very common. There are up to 23 million women of childbearing age in SA. The prevalence of HbA1c above 6.5% is 3.7% in women between the ages of 15-35, and 13.1% in women between the ages of 35-54. The prevalence in the at risk category for developing gestational diabetes is much higher.
This presentation provides information on the classification of diabetes and preconception planning. Speaking at the Physician's Update Conference held in Cape Town during February 2018, Prof Raubenheimer also talks about screening and diagnoses – the how, when and why in the context of Africa and South Africa.
He discusses concepts in glycaemic control and importantly covers the topic of postpartum considerations.
Prof Raubenheimer presents from the South African guidelines of management of diabetes in pregnancy.
