Talk Description
This presentation introduces Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a therapeutic modality initially developed for Borderline Personality Disorder. It can also be effective when working with a range of clinical populations, including other personality disorders, PTSD, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and mood disorders. Additionally, DBT is beneficial for addressing impulsive behaviors (such as self-harm, suicidal behaviors, and aggression), as well as interpersonal difficulties.
The talk explores the origins of DBT, explaining why and how it was developed, while providing a comprehensive overview of the modality. Emphasis will be placed on its model of the Three States of Mind, as well as three core psychological functions that may have been compromised during early development or "go offline" when individuals are triggered. Deficits in these areas can lead to significant impairment and distress across multiple life domains, ultimately affecting an individual’s overall quality of life.
As a skills-based modality, DBT teaches patients how to regulate their nervous systems, manage intense emotional states, improve interpersonal skills, enhance distress tolerance, and better understand their emotions and behavioral patterns. DBT also provides valuable tools for practitioners to effectively manage challenging patient dynamics and improve doctor-patient relationships.
