The detection of coronavirus variants in South Africa in late 2020, and subsequent in vitro and in vivo studies, has had profound consequences for the vaccine rollout programme in South Africa. It has also had major global implications as well. The talk will describe why these variants are so challenging, how they escape the immune response and how this has affected vaccine planning.
