Liver complications in pregnancy. Speaking at the Physicians Refresher Conference in Cape Town in February 2018, Prof Spearman explains that although the condition is rare it has associated increased maternal and fetal mortality. Prof Spearman’s presentation concentrates on pregnancy-associated liver disease, which affects 3% of pregnant women. The presentation provides information on pregnancy associated liver diseases; pre-existing liver disease and liver disease coincidental to pregnancy. Dr Spearman provides information on liver disease in early pregnancy, such as hyperemesis gravidarum and those of late pregnancy such as, intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy (ICP); pre-eclampsia with hapatic involvement; eclampsia; the HELLP syndrome; acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP); and, liver rupture/infarction/haematoma.
