Talk Description
Dr Tucker discusses the management of WWE (Women with Epilepsy) at the Physician’s Refresher Conference held in Cape Town in February 2018. Dr Tucker begins his presentation by stating that Epilepsy not a contraindication to pregnancy but it’s a balancing act to maintain maternal health and minimise foetal risks as risks of poor seizure control increase mortality and morbidity while anti-epileptic drugs are associated with abnormalities and poor neurodevelopmental outcomes.
Dr Tucker discusses the effect of epilepsy and seizures on pregnancy outcomes; the in utero AED exposure on congenital malformations; and, the effect of in utero AED exposure on neurocognitive development. Dr Tucker also provides a pragmatic clinical approach to AED management of WWE, including the time of diagnosis of epilepsy; pre-conception; during pregnancy; during delivery; and, post-delivery and breast feeding.
This presentation also provides information on two recent studies on the topic, i.e.the NEAD and the LMNG studies.
